Samuel Lewis Burgin was born in 1875, lived a normal childhood and enlisted in the army in 1898, at the outbreak of the Spanish American War. Sam served with the 18th Co., U.S. Volunteers, Signal Corps and attained the rank of Sgt. First Class.
Sam later married Nellie Carpenter, daughter of Kinchen John Carpenter and Margaret Craton Carrier. The marriage took place at the home of Nellie's parents in Spartanburg SC., April 12, 1904.
Sam was working as a broker for Howell & Dodsworth Cotton Brokers, at the time. Their main office was located in Charlotte, NC. This being the reason Sam and Nellie first lived in Charlotte.
Later, Sam was transfered to Plains Georgia, where he and Nellie spent most of their lives. Among their neighbors lived a Carter family and their nine year old son James Earl. James (Jimmy) would later become the 39th President of the United States.
Sam died November 28, 1933 (angina) while vacationing in Rutherfordton, NC. Nellie died November 13, 1965 in the same city. Both are buried in Rutherfordton City Cemetery. Sam and Nellie had no children.
